Herald of a Restless World. How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People now available for pre-order!
Dear friends,
I am delighted to announce that, after several years of research and many nights of writing, my biography of Henri Bergson is now available for pre-order (scroll down for pre-order links )! The book is set to be released in October of this year!
Below you can see the supremely distinct, and yet somehow both very Bergsonian, covers crafted by the brilliant UK and US marketing teams at Basic Books (I can’t decide which one I like more):
A bit about my book: Herald of a Restless World. How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People is the first English-language biography of Henri Bergson, the French philosopher who reinvented time and transformed twentieth-century thought.
At the dawn of the twentieth century, Bergson became the most famous philosopher on earth. Where prior thinkers sketched out a deterministic, predictable universe, Bergson asserted the creative power of temporality. An international celebrity, he made headlines around the world debating luminaries like Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein about free will and time. The vision of creative evolution and freedom he presented was so disruptive that the New York Times branded him “the most dangerous man in the world.”
Bergson’s celebration of the time-bending uniqueness of individual experience struck a chord with those shaken by modern technological and social change. Long after he faded from public view, his insights into memory, time, laughter, and evolution continue to shape how we see the world around us.
If you are in North America you can pre-order the book here!
People in the UK and the rest of the world, you can pre-order the book on Amazon (pre-order here for UK, France, Germany …). I will share alternatives as soon as they become available!
Pre-orders are incredibly important for first-time authors like me because they help build anticipation, boost visibility, create early sales momentum, and garner support from booksellers. Your encouragement is therefore much appreciated!
Please do not hesitate to spread the word about my book to your Bergsonian friends, or anyone you think might be interested!
I am beyond excited to share my triple portrait of Bergson’s life, philosophy and world with you all. In the months leading up to publication, I will be posting more details, excerpts and stories that did not make it into the final version. But for now, I leave you with the words of Walter Lippmann from the July 1912 issue of Everybody’s Magazine:
The reason for his stupendous reputation lies, it seems to me, in this: that Bergson is not so much a prophet as a herald in whom the unrest of modern times has found a voice. He is popular because he says with splendid certainty what thousands of people have been feeling vaguely.
Intuitively yours,
Emily
